Kelompok pelaku bisnis menolak rencana pelonggaran beberapa aturan impor dan konten lokal sebagai bagian dari upaya mencari konsesi dengan Washington. Mereka memperingatkan bahwa langkah tersebut dapat lebih merugikan industri lokal daripada membantu meringankan dampak tarif AS terhadap ekspor Indonesia.

Aturan konten lokal dan kuota impor telah lama mendukung upaya Jakarta untuk melindungi dan memperkuat industri dalam negeri. Tetapi, saat ini pemerintah berusaha menggunakannya sebagai alat tawar-menawar dalam negosiasi yang akan segera dilaksanakan bersama mitra pemerintah di AS minggu depan.

"Tidak perlu menghapus [aturan itu] hanya karena negara lain menaikkan tarifnya [terhadap impor dari Indonesia]," kata sekretaris jenderal Gabungan Industri Elektronik Indonesia (Gabel) Daniel Suhardiman kepada The Jakarta Post pada Senin 7 April.

Menurut Daniel, kebijakan tersebut telah berhasil meningkatkan produktivitas manufaktur lokal dan mengamankan investor. "Hambatan nontarif adalah alat standar untuk melindungi pasar negara mana pun; mengapa dihapus?"
