P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo visited on Tuesday areas affected by the eruptions of Mount Semeru in the Lumajang district, East Java, during which he promised residents that the government would boost recovery efforts.

The visit was made three days after the tallest volcano in Java erupted on Saturday, spewing clouds of ash and rocks into the sky and sending pyroclastic flows to villages below.

Speaking after inspecting the damages caused by the eruptions, Jokowi extended his condolences to the fallen victims and promised swift government action to restore the damaged infrastructure in the area.

“On behalf of the government and all Indonesian people, I extend my deepest condolences to [the family of] those who lost their lives in the eruptions of Mt. Semeru,” Jokowi said in Candipuro district, Lumajang regency, on Tuesday.

Jokowi added that the government would soon start to repair the damaged infrastructure and relocate around 2,000 houses from areas deemed unsafe to be repopulated.

Semeru’s eruptions have damaged around 3,000 homes. Volcanic mudflow also destroyed a bridge over the Besuk Sat River, one of four rivers around Mt. Semeru, cutting off a vital access point to Lumajang and neighboring Malang.
