he Barumun Tiger Sanctuary in North Padang Lawas regency, North Sumatra, has welcomed three Sumatran tiger cubs born from parents previously rescued after being caught in traps.
The cubs are thought to have been born on Jan. 23 after keepers at the sanctuary reported observing the cubs through CCTV monitoring. Officers from the North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) later confirmed the findings.
Acting head of North Sumatra’s BBKSDA Irzal Azhar said authorities had yet to be able to confirm the genders of the three cubs as they had not been able to observe them from a close distance because the enclosure was designed to match the tigers’ natural habitat.
“The cages are designed in such a way to resemble the conditions in nature. There are shrubs and water sources,” said Irzal, adding that keepers at the sanctuary constantly monitored the three cubs’ condition through the CCTV.
The cubs were born from a tigress named Gadis and a male tiger named Monang. Gadis, which is estimated to be ten years old, was rescued after authorities found her snared in Mandailing Natal Regency in North Sumatra and she was brought to the Barumun Tiger Sanctuary in 2016. Because of the incident, her right front foot was amputated.
Meanwhile, Monang, estimated to be nine years old, was brought to the sanctuary from Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra, in 2017. Monang was initially found trapped in a snare, but unlike Gadis, his wounds were able to be treated.
This is the second time that the couple has welcomed the birth of tiger cubs. In Dec. 8, 2018, a female cub named Citra Kartini and a male cub called Surya Manggala were also born from the two tigers.
