Flooding that hit Namorambe district, Deli Sedang regency, North Sumatra, on Sunday has killed a family of four who had been trapped inside their car as it was swept away by rushing waters.

The family had been trying to cross the flooded Kuala Lau Simeme bridge when their vehicle was pushed into the river by rushing floodwater. Five people were inside, namely 35-year-old Rahmat and his wife, Putri, their two children and their nephew.
Rahmat was the sole survivor, while the others had remained trapped inside the car when it plunged into the river.
“During the incident, there were five people in the car. The driver survived, while the other four passengers were trapped," Namorambe Police chief Adj. Comr. A. Ginting said on Monday, adding that the victims’ bodies had been evacuated to the nearest hospital in Namorambe.
A joint team from the local police and search and rescue agency found the car in Lau Mulgap village, about 1 kilometer from the Kuala Lau Simeme bridge, on Monday at 10.41 a.m. local time.
"The four victims were found dead in their car [...] about 1 kilometer from the initial location of the incident," Medan search and rescue agency spokesperson Sariman Sitorus told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
Local residents tried to search for the four family members immediately after the incident, which reportedly occurred on Sunday evening.
