he government has retracted plans to raise COVID-19 curbs in Greater Jakarta, only a day after ratcheting up restrictions in the capital area amid a spike in COVID-19 cases.
Home Minister Tito Karnavian signed a ministerial instruction on Tuesday declaring that Jakarta and the cities of Tangerang and South Tangerang in Banten, as well as Bogor, Bekasi and Depok in West Java, would be under level 1 public activity restrictions (PPKM) – the most lenient set of curbs in the four-tiered system – from Wednesday until Aug. 1.
The order negates the previous instruction, signed on Monday, which raised PPKM to level 2.
“When this Ministerial Instruction takes effect, the [previous instruction] will be revoked and declared not applicable,” the latest instruction said, as quoted by Tempo.
Monday’s instruction had intended to put Greater Jakarta under level 2 curbs from Tuesday until Aug. 1, while keeping all other cities and regencies across the country, aside from Sorong regency in West Papua, under level 1 restrictions.
Under the PPKM level 1, essential and non-essential office buildings in Greater Jakarta are allowed to operate at full capacity. Level 2 restrictions permit only 75 percent capacity.
Similarly, under level 1, hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, cinemas, supermarkets, traditional markets, houses of worship, public parks, public facilities and wedding venues are allowed to operate at full capacity.
