s a new school year begins amid an uptick in COVID-19 cases in the country, educator groups and health experts are calling for clearer health policies to help keep students safe and prevent school closures.
While a rise in cases that started in mid-June eased briefly earlier this month, infections have been increasing anew, with thousands of new cases detected each day since July 5.
Health authorities reported 3,822 new cases on Wednesday and new 3,584 cases on Thursday.
Despite the recent surge, the government has kept most regencies and cities under level 1 public activity restrictions (PPKM), the lowest of the four-tiered virus curb system.

Iman Zanatul Haeri of the Education and Teachers’ Association (P2G) said the government should learn from its past mistakes and enforce rigorous and clear-cut health protocols.
