Women's rights campaigner Hana Satriyo gets honorary degree from Portsmouth university
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the University of Portsmouth said the honorary doctor's degree was given in recognition of her work on women's empowerment and gender equality in the past two decades.

he University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom has given an honorary degree to the deputy country representative of the Asia Foundation (TAF) in Jakarta, Hana Afiya Satriyo, for her role in promoting women and minority groups' rights in Indonesia.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the University of Portsmouth, said the honorary doctor's degree was given in recognition of her work on women's empowerment and gender equality in Indonesia.
"She advocates for women's empowerment and gender equality, especially within Indonesia’s decentralized governance and democratic development. She played a leading role in developing gender-responsive budget programs and worked closely with civil society organizations, government ministries and local governments across Indonesia," the University of Portsmouth said in the statement.
In the past two decades, Hana has been working as a senior development professional with experience in developing and managing development programs in Indonesia. She is currently serving as deputy country representative of TAF in Jakarta, a position she has held since January 2020.
Hana received her master’s degree in international politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London, in 1996. She regularly writes about women's issues for a number of academic journals and contributed to the 2010 book Problems of Democratization in Indonesia, published by the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) Singapore with an article titled "Pushing the Boundaries: Women in Local Government".
In a statement after receiving the honorary degree, Hana said there was still a lot of work to be done.
“Everyone around the world needs to understand that we still have a long way to go recognize that women have an important role to play in developing our just societies,” she said.
