he police have vowed to fully investigate a controversial fatal shooting that left Brig. Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat dead, with the possibility of arresting more suspects after charging a fellow officer in relation to the incident.
The National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) on Wednesday evening named Second Agent (Bharada) Richard Eliezer a murder suspect and an accomplice in the incident that occurred at the residence of then-internal affairs chief Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo in South Jakarta in early July.
Murder under Article 338 of the Criminal Code carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
“We found indications that he did not act alone and not in self-defense,” police spokesman Insp. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said.
Richard, commonly referred to as “Bharada E”, is now being held in Bareskrim detention.
He and Yosua had been on duty as Ferdy’s aides de camp, and had returned to the residence hours before the incident while accompanying the family home from a trip to Magelang, Central Java.
According to the police’s initial account, the incident unfolded when Yosua attempted to assault Ferdy's wife in her bedroom. Richard confronted Yosua after hearing the wife scream, but the latter allegedly drew his firearm and fired at Richard. Richard returned fire and killed Yosua at around 5 p.m. on July 8.
