T

he Indonesian Foreign Ministry will hold the fourth iteration of Indonesia-Latin America and the Caribbean Business Forum 2022 (INA-LAC 2022) in October in a bid to strengthen economic relations and provide business opportunities between Indonesia and countries in the Latin American and Caribbean regions.

The ministry’s special staffer for regional diplomacy Ngurah Swajaya said that since the INA-LAC Business Forum had started in 2019 it had also grown significantly.

He said that in terms of the number of participants, INA-LAC had had about 270 participants in 2019 and in 2021 it had had more than 2,800 participants; while business deals made during the event in 2019 had been recorded to be worth US$33.12 million, and in 2021 the deals had been recorded at US$87.96 million.

“We have also seen that our trade values with the Latin American and Caribbean countries continue to rise every year, and the trend will likely continue,'' Swajaya, who was also the former director general for American and European affairs said on Friday.

The event is slated to be held at the JHL Solitaire Gading Serpong hotel and convention center in Tangerang, Banten, on Oct. 17 and 18, consisting of plenary and panel sessions as well as business pitching and matching activities.

Umar Hadi, the ministry’s director general for American and European Affairs, said that Latin America and the Caribbean region shared some similarities with Indonesia; namely, the growing economies in both regions, as well as being rich in natural resources that could complement one another, such as nickel in Indonesia and lithium in Latin America, both of which were important materials for batteries.

“I do see a promising future for trade and investment relations as well as partnerships between Indonesia and our Southeast Asia region with the Latin America and the Caribbean region, because of the complementarity of our regions,” Umar said.
