haul of confiscated fireworks exploded on Sunday evening, injuring an officer near a police barrack in Grogol, Sukoharjo, Central Java.
Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Ahmad Luthfi confirmed on Monday that the blast was not a terrorist act.
A package of illegal fireworks exploded when it was being handled by chief Brig. Dirgantara, who suffered burn injuries on 37 percent of his body.
Ahmad said the package was part of several explosive material packages confiscated by Surakarta Police last year. “It was likely that the materials were in transit to be removed from the old Surakarta Police headquarters to the new one. We are waiting for the officer to heal for questioning,” he said.
Following the incident, the police have disposed of four packages and kept two packages as evidence, the police chief said. (dre)
