ndonesia strongly condemned the use of excessive force by Israeli security forces during a raid in the West Bank city of Jenin that killed at least nine Palestinian civilians.

“This brutal action by Israel will further complicate the attainment of peace in the Middle East,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its Twitter account on Friday.

The ministry went on to say that Indonesia called on the international community and the United Nations to urge Israel to respect the rights of the Palestinian people.

On Thursday, Israeli forces raided the crowded refugee camp in the northern city of Jenin, which the Israeli military described as a counterterrorism operation to apprehend “an Islamic Jihad terror squad,” AFP reported.

Palestinian health officials recorded nine deaths from the clashes during the Israeli forces raid, with 20 people wounded before Israeli forces withdrew by mid-morning.

A 10th Palestinian was shot by Israeli forces in Al-Ram, near Ramallah, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Following the violence, the Palestinian Authority announced that it was cutting security coordination with Israel, which was promptly criticized by the United States.

The latest deaths increased the number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank this year to 30, most of whom were shot by Israeli forces.

At least 200 Palestinians and 26 Israelis were killed across Israel and Palestinian territories in 2022, the majority of which were in the West Bank, according to an AFP tally.

Thousands flocked to the funerals of those killed in Jenin, as the Palestinian presidency announced three days of mourning, saying that the raid on Thursday happened “under international silence.”

"This is what encourages the occupation government to commit massacres against our people in full view of the world," Nabil Abu Rudeinah, spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas said.

Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have issued statements condemning the deadly Israeli raid.

Earlier on Thursday, Washington announced that the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken would travel next week to Israel and the Palestinian territories, where he would push for an “end to the cycle of violence.”

On Jan. 18, during an open debate at the UN Security Council in New York, Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi called on the Israeli government to stop provocations in Palestine and start on a peaceful process toward a two-state solution.

“Mr. President, the year 2023 must be the year of progress in resolving the Palestinian issue. It is our collective responsibility to end the Israeli occupation once and for all,” Retno said, addressing the UNSC presidency currently held by Japan.
