Luhut said that the fuel storage facility should remain in place given its strategic role and it was the residents living in the vicinity of the establishment who should instead be relocated.
oordinating Maritime and Investment Affairs Minister Luhut Panjaitan has rejected a plan proposed by other senior government officials to relocate state-owned oil and gas operator PT Pertamina's fuel storage facility in Plumpang, North Jakarta.
Luhut said that the fuel storage facility should remain in place given its strategic role and it was the residents living in the vicinity of the establishment who should instead be relocated.
"Don't twist this around. Plumpang was designed to be in the area complete with its buffer zone. It should not be relocated, it is the people living around the area who should be relocated," Luhut said in his speech at an Indonesian Navy event.
Luhut said that the government could compensate people who would be evicted from the area around Plumpang or build apartments to house them.
The senior minister also blamed government officials who issued permits for residents around Plumpang to remain in the area.
"This should not happen again in the future. It's just wrong," Luhut said.
State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir announced on Monday that Pertamina would relocate its integrated fuel storage depot servicing Greater Jakarta and add a buffer zone to the facility.
