he Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is interrogating Communications and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate on alleged corruption in the construction of base transceiver stations (BTS), which was under the auspices of his ministry.
The BTS construction project is headed by the Telecommunications and Information Accessibility Agency (BAKTI), an agency under the Communications and Information Ministry. The graft case is believed to have cost the state Rp 1 trillion (US$64 million).
Johnny was seen arriving at AGO headquarters at around 9 a.m. on Wednesday with his legal team in tow, according to various news reports. The NasDem Party politician did not respond to any questions from journalists.
Johnny’s status remains as a witness in the case, which is being investigated by a team of investigators, led by the office of the junior attorney general for special crimes (Jampidsus).
But the investigators aim at digging deeper into Johnny’s role and “his position [as someone in charge of the ministry and therefore, of its allocation] of budget”, Jampidsus director of investigation Kuntadi said on Monday, tempo.co reported.
This was the second time Johnny showed up for questioning at the AGO headquarters. In a questioning session in mid-February, he faced 51 questions over nine hours for his supervisory role in the BTS project and as expender of state funds.
As of last month, the investigation team had named five people as suspects after questioning some 60 people about the procurement process.
