ith the 2023 mudik (exodus) season expected to see a record of more than 120 million Indonesians traveling across the country, the Public Works and Housing Ministry plans to temporarily open 11 new toll roads across Java and Sumatra to accommodate travelers.

“The 11 toll roads, consisting of seven roads in Java and four in Sumatra with a total length of 222 kilometers, will only be open during the mudik period,” Indonesia Toll Road Authority (BPJT) secretary Triono Junoasmono said in a press release published on Monday.

“For now, we’re still conducting some last-minute work scheduled to be completed 10 days before Idul Fitri.”

Separately, Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono expected that one of the toll roads, the 28.2 km-long segment four through six of the Cisumdawu toll road, will considerably help travelers trying to go from the south coast to the north coast of West Java.

“People going from [Bandung, West Java] to [Semarang, Central Java] no longer have to go through Cikampek anymore, they can go straight to Dawuan,” Basuki said on Thursday. Segment one through three of the Cisumdawu toll road, which connects Cileunyi in Bandung, West Java, to Dawuan in Cirebon, also in West Java, is already operational.

Other new toll roads include segment two of the Ciawi-Sukabumi toll road (11.9 km), segment two of the Cimanggis-Cibitung toll road (3.5 km), segment four of the Pasuruan-Probolinggo toll road (8.6 km), segment one of the Surakarta-Yogyakarta toll road (6.1 km), segment four of the Cibitung-Cilincing toll road (7.3 km) and segment three of the Jakarta-Cikampek II toll road (28.7 km).
