resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has appointed Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD the interim communications and information technology minister following the arrest of incumbent minister Johnny G. Plate.
President Jokowi announced the decision shortly before boarding the presidential aircraft to fly to Japan for the G7 summit.
"The replacement [for Johhny] will be the coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister," Jokowi told reporters.
The President declined to comment on whether he would appoint a permanent replacement for Johnny, a senior politician of the NasDem Party who was arrested on Wednesday for a graft case in the procurement of base transceiver stations (BTSs) for a 4G telephony project.
Jokowi also maintained that prosecutors at the Attorney General's Office would uphold impartiality in its probe into the graft case.
"The Attorney General's Office is being professional in its work and I want everybody to respect the legal process," Jokowi said.
Johnny was arrested on Wednesday after a three-hour interrogation by investigators from the office of the assistant attorney general for extraordinary crimes (Jampidsus) in Jakarta. It was his third interrogation in three months.
