upporters clashed after a match between home soccer team Gresik United and Deltras FC outside the Joko Samudro Sports Stadium, in Gresik, East Java, on Sunday, injuring at least 28 and causing damage to property.
The riot broke out after Gresik United lost to the visiting team which came from Sidoarjo, another regency in the province, with a score of 1-2. According to Gresik Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Adhitya Panji Anom, Gresik United supporters were disappointed with the home team’s loss.
The situation escalated when supporters reportedly threw stones at Deltras FC’s bus, following which the police fired tear gas at the rioters. “The police took preventive action by firing tear gas by procedure outside of the stadium to disperse the masses,” said Adhitya.
According to the police, 10 police officers were injured during the incident with five being hospitalized, while seven supporters went through outpatient treatment at Bhayangkara Hospital after suffering minor injuries. Adhitya added that the police were currently conducting an investigation into the incident. “We’re still digging into this case and collecting evidence for follow-up measures,” he said.
Muhammad Syamsud Dluha, a management team member of Gresik United, said a total of 28 people were injured during the riot and treated in nearby hospitals, including 11 police officers and 17 supporters. "We've checked everyone, most of them have been cleared to go home," he said.
Arya Sinulingga, an executive committee member of the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI), said he had coordinated with East Java PSSI and the National Presidium of Indonesian Supporters (PNSI) to solve the cases.
