The authorities confirmed on Monday that four soldiers were killed on Saturday during a firefight with members of a Papuan armed criminal group (KKB).
ndonesian Military (TNI) chief Gen. Agus Subiyanto confirmed on Monday the deaths of four soldiers on Saturday during a firefight with members of an armed criminal group (KKB), which has been responsible for a series of killings in Nduga regency, Papua Highlands.
"We all extend our condolences," said Agus, as quoted by kompas.com on Monday.
Agus said the four soldiers were engaged in a pursuit operation against the KKB members responsible for the killings in Paro district, Nduga regency, Papua Highlands.
The four soldiers have been identified only as Chief Pvt. YL, Chief Pvt. DB, First Pvt. MF and Second Pvt. D. They will be buried in their respective hometowns.
Agus, who is currently still serving as Army chief of staff, added that the families of the soldiers would receive an allowance of Rp 500 million (US$ 32,275) each.
“We have paid out compensation according to their dues. From Asabri [Indonesian Military Insurance] Pap, the Indonesian Army, Bank BRI, BJB [Jabar Banten Bank] at Rp 500 million per soldier,” he said, as quoted by detik.com.
The soldiers were from the 411/Pandawa Raider Mechanized Infantry Battalion, which is based in Salatiga, Central Java. The battalion is part of the Army Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad) 2nd Infantry Division.
