The General Elections Commission chairman Hasyim Asy'ari said moderators for the presidential debates should be personalities known by the public, and that social media personalities and content creators could easily meet that criteria.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) has floated the idea of allowing YouTube personalities and content creators to serve as moderators in the upcoming official presidential debates sanctioned by the poll body.
KPU chairman Hasyim Asy'ari said moderators for the presidential debates should be personalities known by the public and social media personalities and content creators could easily meet that criteria.
"It is very likely [for social media personalities] to serve as moderators. The point is that these debates will be broadcast live and we need someone who is camera-friendly," Hasyim said, as quoted by Kompas on Wednesday.
A primary requirement for candidates for the moderator position would be their mastery of subjects discussed in the presidential debates.
The KPU will stage the first presidential debate on Dec. 12 with presidential candidates and their running mates discussing legal affairs, human rights and corruption eradication.
The poll body has been criticized for its slow deliberation on the technical details of the presidential debates.
Hasyim said on Wednesday that the KPU leadership currently had a shortlist of candidates for the moderator positions.
The KPU is expected to announce the names of the moderators on Friday.
