Sukabumi was struck on Thursday morning by a 4.7-magnitude earthquake, which was also felt in several other regions in West Java as well as in South Tangerang, Banten.
A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck at 6:35 a.m. on Thursday in Sukabumi regency, West Java.
The tremor was reportedly felt in other regions in the province including the city of Bogor, Gunung Sindur in Bogor regency and Depok, as well as South Tangerang in neighboring Banten province.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the epicenter of the earthquake was located 24 kilometers northwest of Sukabumi city at a depth of 10 km.
“This information prioritizes speed, so the result of the data processed is not yet [accurate] and could change as the data grows,” the BMKG posted to its @infoBMKG account on X, formerly Twitter.
The agency also recorded several aftershocks: the latest had a magnitude of 2.2 and occurred at 11:16 a.m., around 13 km southwest of Sukabumi.
The earthquake follows a warning from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (CVGHM) on increased seismic activities at both Mount Salak and Mount Gede.
According to CVGHM head Hendra Gunawan, the frequency of earthquakes had increased to more than four times a day. He said a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck northwest Bogor last Friday and triggered an increase in tectonic activities around Mt. Salak.
