ount Gede Pangrango National Park chief Sapto Aji Prabowo warned the public on Tuesday evening that the rainy season could cause the mount’s crater to emit toxic gas.

He advised people to maintain at least a 1.5-kilometer distance from the crater.

"Please do not approach the crater and peak area, especially when it rains because there is a chance of toxic gas," Sapto said, as quoted by kompas.com.

This instruction is stated in Circular No. SE.20/BBTNGGP/Tek/B/12/2023 concerning warnings for hiking activities in Mount Gede Pangrango National Park, issued on Dec. 11. This letter is addressed to climbers, communities, tourism managers and visitors.

Mount Gede Pangrango spans the Bogor, Cianjur and Sukabumi regencies in West Java.

Sapto said there were no plans to close the hiking trail due to the normal weather in the conservation area. He added that the situation in the park area remains safe.

"For now, there is no closure plan. But it is likely routine closures will be carried out from January to March due to extreme weather," Sapto said, as quoted by tribunnews.com.
