Vice-presidential candidate Mahfud MD canceled his campaign trip to Mataram City in West Nusa Tenggara on Monday due to exhaustion, his spokesperson has said.
The coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister was supposed to attend the Mahfud Guru Bangsa (MGB) volunteer event. He had also planned to give a speech to an audience of 1,500 people, including teachers of Islam and the Quran and the leaders of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools).
Rizal Mustary, Mahfud’s spokesperson, said the VP candidate’s physician had advised him to rest after a busy stretch of campaign activities.
“The doctor advised Pak Mahfud MD to rest for a few days after attending a very busy schedule of activities in the last few days. This morning, he decided not to leave for West Nusa Tenggara,” Rizal said on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Separately, Muzihir, the head of the West Nusa Tenggara campaign team for presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo and Mahfud, his running mate, said that a number of scheduled events would go ahead even without Mahfud’s presence.
The deputy coordinator of the Ganjar-Mahfud national campaign team (TPN), Tuan Guru Bajang will appear on behalf of Mahfud, as will other TPN representatives such as Muhammad Zainul Majdi.
“God willing, Pak Mahfud MD’s visit to West Nusa Tenggara will be rescheduled,” Muzihir told state news agency Antara.

Candidates for the 2024 presidential election are knee-deep in campaign activities until Feb. 10, 2024, a few days before voters head to the polls.
The tight campaign window has prompted the three camps to put together densely packed schedules, although concerns have emerged over the health of the candidates.
The 2024 election campaign period is 75 days, much shorter than the 203-day campaign window in 2019.
