The Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has said presidential candidate Anies Baswedan’s campaign team committed a campaign violation by arranging a weekday event at a university campus in Bengkulu.

The agency said campaign events at universities were only permitted on weekends and holidays and noted that Anies’ team had held an event at the province’s Hazairin University on Dec. 6, 2023, a Wednesday.

Ahmad Maskuri, coordinator for violations and dispute resolution at Bawaslu’s Bengkulu office, alleged that the Anies camp had committed two violations while campaigning in the province, based on the agency’s investigation of the campaign team and event organizers.

The first offense was campaigning outside of the designated days, while the second was the display of campaign materials during Anies' dialogue with university students.

"[We’ve] held a plenary meeting. [The campaign] was in violation [of campaign rules]. Bawaslu’s findings have been conveyed to the election participant concerned through the regional campaign team in the area," said Anggi Stephensent, head of legal and supervision at the Bengkulu office of the General Elections Commission (KPU), on Monday, as quoted by Antara.

Anggi added that the Bengkulu KPU had previously formed a legal team to investigate the alleged campaign violations at the recommendation of Bawaslu’s Bengkulu office. The Bengkulu KPU also probed three people related to the Anies camp’s alleged campaign violations at Hazairin University.
