Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo has claimed that he and President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo remain best friends and he continues to be on good terms with his fellow party member.
Ganjar made the remark on Sunday, when he joined a campaign event in Pos Bloc, Central Jakarta.
In a speech delivered to the event, Ganjar also expressed confidence that his friendship with Jokowi would endure.
"We're best friends. It does not make sense for some best friends to be around while others are not. Best friends last forever. Jokowi is my forever best friend," Ganjar said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Ganjar made the comment after an announcer in the event pointed to a member of the audience who resembled Kaesang Pangarep, Jokowi's youngest son and the chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).
Ganjar playfully asked the Kaesang look-alike about the current condition of his "father." The joke prompted the announcer to ask Ganjar if he was still friends with Jokowi, after which the former Central Java governor reaffirmed his friendship with the incumbent President.
Ganjar is the presidential candidate backed by the PDI-P, Jokowi’s main political sponsor. However, the relationship between Jokowi and the PDI-P soured when Jokowi’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka was picked to be the running mate for Prabowo Subianto, a presidential candidate with the backing of the Gerindra Party.
