s the political campaigning for the 2024 general elections draws to a close, a coalition of volunteer organizations specializing in cleaning up plastic pollution and marine debris has kicked off, working to take down campaign paraphernalia and begin recycling the material.

The campaign, initiated by the environmental group Langit Biru Pertiwi (Motherland's Blue Sky), is aimed at creating an atmosphere conducive to the balloting process on Feb. 14, when more than 205 million voters across the country are scheduled to cast their votes.

"In anticipation of the Feb. 14 election, we’ve begun this campaign to clean up campaign paraphernalia from the street, so that we can have an environment conducive for balloting," Nadia Mulya of Langit Biru Pertiwi said in a statement published on Friday.

Nadia also said that the campaign was not in any way political and had no links with any political party or presidential candidate.

"We gather here not for any political party or presidential candidate but for the Earth. We're all inconvenienced by the presence of all this campaign paraphernalia and we aim to turn this waste into something more useful," she said.

In carrying out the cleaning up and recycling campaign, Langit Biru Pertiwi will work with the Jakarta Environmental Agency and the city’s Public Order Agency.
