odern retailers in Jakarta continue to face a rice supply shortage as of Thursday, caused by the high price of unhusked and husked rice at the production centers, which has affected the price and supply of rice nationwide.

The shortage is despite the government having ordered the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) to distribute 250,000 tonnes of rice to the market, including modern retailers, to stabilize the price and supply of the staple food.

The National Food Agency (Bapanas) also has acknowledged the low rice supply in some modern retailers in Jakarta.

Bapanas head Arief Prasetyo Adi said the agency had monitored the rice distribution to every retail store, which took place from Tuesday to Thursday. However, the distribution process may take up to a week to reach all retail outlets.

The National Police’s food task force is also involved in the rice distribution process. Its goal is to obtain and store accurate information in case of any problems. It oversees rice mills, storage facilities and modern retail stores as well as traditional markets.

“We also track the distribution routes, so we hope there is no area that lacks rice stock,” task force chief Brig. Gen. Whisnu Hermawan said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
