T

he leadership of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) held a meeting with outgoing President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Thursday, during which the country's largest Muslim organization pledged to invest in the planned new capital Nusantara in the jungle of East Kalimantan.

Chairman of the NU, Yahya Staquf, who met with Jokowi while protests were raging in the capital over a plan to amend the Regional Elections Law, said that in the initial stage, the organization would purchase at least 100 hectares of land in Nusantara, on which it would build a number of facilities.

"I have told Pak President that, God willing, we will invest in the new capital. First, we will acquire 100 hectares of land," Yahya told reporters after the meeting.

The senior NU leader said the organization planned to build facilities for education, health and religious purposes.

Yahya said that Jokowi had given his blessing to the plan and had suggested several plots the NU could acquire in Nusantara.

The NU expects to invest between Rp 2 trillion (US$128 million) and Rp 3 trillion in a number of projects in Nusantara, Yahya said.
