Several regions are still projected to feature one candidate pair running in the upcoming simultaneous regional races, even after the General Elections Commission (KPU) reopened the registration period until Wednesday.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) will consult with House of Representatives lawmakers next week to discuss the procedure should candidate pairs fail to win in uncontested regional head elections in November.
The poll body has reopened registration in regions where only one candidate pair has registered until Wednesday to avoid them being uncontested. However, several regions are still projected to feature only one candidate pair on their ballots.
The KPU sent a letter requesting a consultation with the House on Wednesday, said chairman Mochammad Afifuddin on Wednesday.
“The consultation will address what would happen if the kotak kosong [blank box] were to win in a regional election,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com, referring to the empty box on the ballot.
A period of less than three months is now left before the November elections, when voters across the nation will simultaneously elect governors across 37 provinces, as well as mayors and regents in over 500 cities and regencies.
