T

he Gerindra Party has promised that president-elect Prabowo Subianto will vet his ministers thoroughly after former vice president Jusuf Kalla criticized Education, Culture, Research and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim over what he claimed was the minister’s lack of expertise in education, poor track record in office and absenteeism.

"We need a long time to vet potential ministers because we need to see their capacity and their background thoroughly," party executive Rahayu Saraswati said on Sunday, as reported by kompas.com.

She added that all ministers in Prabowo’s future cabinet would have to be able to execute his campaign promises and policy goals and understand the ins and outs of the country's bureaucracy.

"We will consider everything," Rahayu said.

Kalla criticized Nadiem’s policies as minister as well as what the former vice president said was his lack of experience in the education sector.

"All of our previous education ministers were great figures in the education sector, such as Ki Hajar Dewantoro, who established the Taman Siswa school; Mohammad Nuh, a former rector of the Tenth of November Institute of Technology; and Anies Baswedan, a former rector of Paramadina University," Kalla said in a public discussion on Saturday.

"Then there is Nadiem, who doesn't have any experience as a teacher nor has he held any position in an educational institution. He has also never visited [schools] in [remote] regions," he said.
