Following her tumultuous tenure over the last five years, when the House was beset by accusations of pushing bills through without public participation, the newly reinstalled Speaker has vowed that this time, the legislature will be open to the people's views and feedback.
uan Maharani, an executive of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), said on Tuesday following her reelection as Speaker of the House of Representatives that the national legislature would remain open to public criticism during her tenure over the next five years.
"During my leadership, insya Allah [God willing], I will ignite the spirit of cooperation to realize a modern, open and aspirational legislature. I will also strive to make it a true house for the people,” Puan said in her speech on Oct. 1, addressing the 580 newly installed legislators for the 2024-2029 term, as quoted by Kompas.com.
“We also invite participation from all components of society, including the press, intellectuals, academics, students, NGOs, mass organizations and others, to provide input, views and criticism of the various policies that will be taken," she continued.
Puan took her oath of office at a plenary session on Tuesday evening alongside her newly elected deputy speakers: Adies Kadir of the Golkar Party, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal of the National Awakening Party (PKB), Saan Mustopa of the NasDem Party and Sufmi Dasco Ahmad of the Gerindra Party.
The five members of the House leadership represent the political parties that won the largest shares of votes in February’s legislative election.
Under her speakership in 2019-2024, the House leadership faced numerous accusations of rushing through the legislative process with little to no public participation.
The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) has urged lawmakers to avoid repeating the mistake of the previous House during their five-year term.
