East Java's counterpart to Transjakarta plans to expand the number of stops on its Surabaya-Bangkalan route with 24 new shelters, primarily on the Madura side, to help workers and students commute from the island to regions on mainland Java.
he East Java (Jatim) Transportation Agency plans to add 24 shelters along Corridor V of the province-run Trans Jatim BRT (bus rapid transit), the service’s newest route that connects the provincial capital Surabaya and Bangkalan regency on Madura Island.
The 59-kilometer Surabaya-Bangkalan route was launched on Sept. 30 with 58 stops, including 30 shelters, and is served by 15 buses, each carrying up to 30 passengers.
Ainur Rofiq, the agency’s road transportation head, said on Tuesday that increasing the number of shelters was necessary to make it easier for passengers to use the service.
Rofiq said the agency was prioritizing adding new shelters on the Madura end, as many island residents commuted to Surabaya.
Corridor V connects Purabaya Terminal in Surabaya and Bangkalan Terminal on Madura, via the cable-stayed Suramadu Bridge.
When it first opened, Trans Jatim offered free trips until Oct. 7 to promote the route, after which passenger fares were set at Rp 5,000 (32 US cents) per trip, with a special rate of Rp 2,500 for students.
The route’s Madura section currently has just four bus shelters on the stretch to Bangkalan, all of which are repurposed old or disused shelters under the Bangkalan Transportation Agency.
