he Yogyakarta administration said it had confiscated thousands of bottles of alcoholic beverages from unlicensed stores and shut down unlicensed outlets following an order by Governor Hamengku Buwono X.
Ditya Nanaryo Aji, the administration’s spokesman, said that the governor has issued instructions regarding the control and monitoring of alcoholic beverages.
“Regencies and [Yogyakarta] city administrations have taken numerous actions with the police,” Ditya told Tempo on Sunday.
Sultan Hamengku Buwono X issued on Wednesday an order to curb the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in response to a massive rally last week in Yogyakarta which called for the jailing of suspects in an alcohol-fueled rampage.
The governor has also called for the drafting of strict regulations on the issue, saying that the sale of alcoholic drinks in Yogyakarta, including online, has gotten out of control and has created serious problems in the local community.
"Regents and mayors have the authority to issue a new regulation. Existing regulations have been out of date as they don't concern online sales. I don't want to see that because we don't have regulations to deal with online sales of alcoholic drinks, our children become the victims," the Governor said in a statement on Thursday.
On Oct. 29, thousands of people held a rally at the Yogyakarta Provincial Police headquarters in Sleman calling for an end to the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in the province.
