T

he University of Indonesia has suspended the graduation of Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia from its doctoral program at the School of Global and Strategic Studies over concerns about academic dishonesty.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, UI board of trustees chair Yahya Cholil Staquf wrote that the decision had been made after a meeting on Tuesday involving the university’s board of trustees, academic senate, board of professors and rectorate.

The bodies considered the results of an investigation launched by the senate and board of professors into student enrollment procedures, research supervision, graduation requirements and dissertation defense at the school.

At the Tuesday meeting, the UI bodies also decided to schedule an ethics hearing, led by the board of professors, to investigate the dissertation supervision process for students at the School of Global and Strategic Studies, including Bahlil. The hearing was held to “ensure the university’s academic activities are done professionally and are free of conflict of interest”.

“The status of [Bahlil’s] graduation will follow the results of the ethics hearing,” wrote Yahya, who is also the chairman of Indonesia’s largest Islamic group, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), in the statement.

He added that the controversy surrounding Bahlil’s doctorate studies stemmed from poor administration within UI. The findings led the university to suspend the admission of new students to the School of Global and Strategic Studies program, pending the results of a comprehensive audit of the school’s governance and academic processes.
