n line with National Teachers' Day, Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti has announced a series of initiatives aimed at improving the quality and welfare of the nation’s educators, including offering them a chance to attain higher education.
On Monday, the ministry held elaborate celebrations to commemorate the occasions, complete with a flag-hoisting ceremony, parades of teachers from across the country and musical performances.
Opening the event, Abdul said that the theme of "Guru Hebat Indonesia Kuat" (Great Teachers, Strong Indonesia), embodied three principles: teachers as professional educators; teachers as agents of both learning and change; and teachers determining the quality of future generations.
“In line with the vision of quality education for all, the education ministry seeks to improve the quality of teachers through three priority programs to improve teacher qualifications and skills [...] as well as their welfare,” Abdul said.
Noting that some 290,000 teachers have yet to attain a bachelor’s degree (S1) or a 4-year diploma (D4) degree, he said the ministry would provide opportunities for teachers to complete their higher education, although he did not provide further details of what the policy would entail.
The ministry will also offer various training and courses so teachers can increase their knowledge as well as competence in their entrepreneurial and leadership skills.
“In order to strengthen character education, the ministry has begun providing teachers with training in guidance counseling,” Abdul said.
