Paris officially requested Atlaoui's transfer in a letter from the minister of justice dated Dec. 19, according to Minister Yusril.
rench national Serge Atlaoui, who has been on death row in Indonesia since 2005 for drug offenses, is scheduled to return to his home country next month after Jakarta and Paris signed on Friday an agreement on his repatriation.
"Both parties have agreed to transfer [Atlaoui] on Feb. 4," Coordinating Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Correctional Services Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said on Friday as reported by Antara.
Yusril signed the repatriation agreement with the French Minister of Justice Gerald Darmanin via video teleconference in the Coordinating Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Correctional Services Ministry Office in South Jakarta.
French Ambassador to Indonesia, Fabien Penone, also attended the event.
France has agreed to several terms proposed by Indonesia, Yusril said, including acknowledging the death sentence ruling for Atlaoui.
"After the transfer, all depends on the French government, whether they want to give him clemency or give a sentence in accordance with French law," Yusril said.
Based on French law, the maximum punishment for a similar case is 30 years in jail, he added.
