T

he National Police have seized 192 kilograms of sabu-sabu (crystal methamphetamine) in Bireun, Aceh,  being smuggled by a Malaysian-Indonesian drug trafficking network.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Agency’s (Bareskrim) Narcotics Directorate arrested a suspect identified only as M on April 8, at about 3 a.m.

The police also seized sabu-sabu packets, which were ready for distribution.

“Yes, this is a Malaysian-Indonesian drug ring. We are still interrogating the suspect,” Narcotics Directorate chief Brig. Gen. Eko Hadi Santoso said at the Bareskrim headquarters in South Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Eko said that the suspect resisted arrest and attempted to flee, leading to a traffic accident when officers gave chase.

“There was a collision between the suspect’s car and a truck in Aceh. Alhamdulillah [Thank God], there were no fatalities in the accident,” he said.

The suspect M was arrested after picking up sabu-sabu packets from the sea.

M conducted a series of attempts to deceive officers so that he could bring the packets ashore.

“The modus operandi is they [drug ring members] pick the packets up from the sea,” Eko said.

“Then they create various deception scenarios to avoid surveillance and bring the packets ashore.”

Eko said police officers found the evidence in a neatly packed condition. “We will provide the details of the evidence, including photos and other documentations,” he said.

The police are still investigating the case to uncover other networks.

Efforts to secure and mitigate both supply and demand are also being intensified.

The suspect faces charges relating to Articles 114 and 112 of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics which carry punishments ranging from five years behind bars up to the death penalty. The articles also stipulate fines ranging from Rp 800 million (US$47,668) to Rp 10 billion. (nvn)
