Central Java to extend sea dike toll road to combat worsening tidal flooding

The hardest hit region is Sayung district, where nearly half of the 20 villages face daily tidal floods, usually between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Floodwaters often rise as high as 30 centimeters and worsen during the rainy season.

T

he Central Java administration has proposed a 10-kilometer extension of the under-construction Semarang–Demak sea dike toll road amid worsening coastal flooding that has submerged hundreds of homes and engulfed entire villages in Demak regency.

Central Java Deputy Governor Taj Yasin said he had formally submitted the Rp 1.7 trillion (US$104.48 million) proposal to Public Works Minister Dody Hanggoro.

“This project was requested by residents in Demak’s coastal areas who have long suffered from recurring tidal floods,” Taj said in a recent interview. “It’s expected to help resolve flooding in 22 villages across four districts.”

According to Taj, the extension would run eastward toward the border of Jepara regency, passing through the districts of Sayung, Karangtengah, Bonang and Wedung.

Dody said his ministry would review the proposal before submitting it to President Prabowo Subianto and the House of Representatives for approval.

“We will process this proposal. We don’t want people to continue suffering and to lose precious memories because their land and homes were claimed by the sea,” Dody said on Sunday, as quoted by Kompas.id.
