A

huge saltwater crocodile died on Thursday after 19 days under the care of Indragiri Hilir Fire and Rescue Agency due to a severe infection from its wounds following its captured by local villagers.

The 5.7 meter predator, nicknamed Si Undan, was caught in Sungai Undan village in Indragiri Hilir regency, Riau, on Oct. 31. The wounds were caused by rope knots that bound its legs too tight.

Indragiri Hilir Fire and Rescue Agency chief Junaidi Ismail said that a medical team had observed the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) for several hours before declaring it dead.

“We tried various efforts [to rescue its life], we observed its health, nutrition intake and for other possible treatments,” he said at his office in regency administrative seat of Tembilahan on Friday.

“However, the crocodile’s condition continued to deteriorate, and we could not save its life.”

The saltwater crocodile weighed around 585 kilograms and had a waist circumference of 2 meters.
