The Medan Immigration Office has arrested four Sri Lankans who were suspected of involvement in a human trafficking syndicate.
The four suspects were identified as TK, RS, MT and NS.
Medan Immigration Office head Uray Avian said the suspects were arrested while managing the illegal departure of people to France using a boat from Kuala Langsa waters in Aceh.
The suspects are currently being held at the Medan Detention House.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Uray said the case unraveled from the Medan Immigration Office’s intelligence operation tracing two Sri Lankans who were believed to have overstayed their visas.
The intelligence officers received information that the two Sri Lankans would be exiting Indonesian territory illegally. Based on the collected information, Uray said, there were several people who were helping the Sri Lankans in their illegal departure. TK took the role as local operator, RS was the mastermind and collected money from victims, MT was victim recruiter and NS prepared logistics and food for victims while they were at shelter.
Uray said that Medan Immigration Office’s intelligence officers managed to sniff the syndicate’s movement and arrested MT at a hotel in Medan on Dec. 5, followed by the arrests of RS, TK and NS.
