T

he Riau Islands provincial administration launched the artificial intelligence-based Pantunesia program to conserve pantun (rhyming quatrains), a form of Malay culture, on Wednesday evening.

Pantunesia was launched on National Pantun Day by assistant to the provincial secretary for governance and people’s welfare TS Arif Fadillah at the Dekranasda building in Tanjungpinang.

The app is designed as a cultural study space, combining authentic tradition with digital innovation. In contrast to other automatic text-making apps, the AI technology in Pantunesia functions as an assessor to ensure a pantun created is in accordance with the structure, meaning and philosophy of Malay cultural heritage.

“The AI [used] in the app does not make pantuns, but it acts as a judge to provide a score, show deficiencies and suggest improvements,” Pantunesia developer Yoan S. Nugraha said in a press release by Riau Islands Information and Communications Agency on Thursday.

Pantunesia is a cultural conservation app which was designed together with Malay pantun masters, so every feature being developed is still based on the structure, meaning and philosophy of pantun as a piece of cultural heritage.

“Pantunesia is born from our concerns on the limited cultural-based pantun assessment infrastructure,” Yoan said.

He said that Pantunesia was first developed at the end of 2018 in the form of physical flash cards, which were then developed into a PowerPoint-based app in 2022 with the support of Cultural Conservation Agency (BPK).
