our containers of electronic waste have finally been re-exported from Batu Amprt Port in Batam, Riau Islands, to their country of origin, the United States, after the administrative process was completed.

The re-export of the four containers is only the beginning of the re-export of some 910 containers holding hazardous waste from the US currently being accumulated at the port. The step is a follow-up from the recommendation to re-export the hazardous waste, which was issued in October.

Batam Customs and Excise Office closely monitored the loading of the containers initially imported by PT Esun International Utama on Tuesday.

Zaky Firmansyah, the Batam Customs Office chief, said in a written statement on Thursday that there was no room for negotiation for illegal waste and that all hazardous waste must be removed from Indonesia’s territory.

“Requests for re-export are followed up in batches and are currently awaiting shipping space. All containers holding hazardous waste must be re-exported,” he said.

The four re-exported containers hold used electronics components, such as computers, hard disks, modems, power boards and printed circuit boards.

Re-exporting the four containers is a small part of solving the issue of 914 containers that have accumulated at Batu Ampar Port. So far, Batam Customs Office and the Environmental Law Enforcement Directorate General have inspected 74 suspect containers. The remaining containers are prevented from leaving the port.
