T

he National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) has projected that the peak of this year’s homecoming mudik (exodus) traffic flow has taken place two days ahead of Idul Fitri.

Korlantas chief Insp. Gen. Agus Suryonugroho said on Thursday that there had been an increase of traffic volume to 250,000 vehicles on Wednesday from 221,000 on Tuesday, based on direct monitoring of toll and arterial roads.

“Conditions are indeed quite congested, but traffic is still moving,” Agus was quoted as saying by Bisnis.com.

This year’s Idul Fitri will either take place on Friday or Saturday, pending the isbat (moon sighting confirmation) on Thursday evening.

To ease traffic congestion, the police have implemented a national one-way traffic system since Wednesday, extending to the Central Java region, which Agus assessed as effective in keeping traffic conditions relatively under control.

The traffic police noted a relatively smooth flow of traffic overall despite slowdowns at several points both on toll and arterial roads.

“From the arterial roads, toll roads and ports, everything is under control. The Merak-Bakauheni crossing is also running smoothly,” said Agus.
