T

he University of Indonesia (UI) has suspended 16 law students whose chat messages containing sexually explicit language went viral over the weekend, angering fellow students and renewing public concerns on sexual violence on campuses.

The 16 students are banned from participating in all academic activities, including lectures, from April 25 to May 30. They are also banned from entering campus premises except for investigation-related purposes conducted by the university’s anti-sexual violence task force or urgent matters under university supervision.

The case first surfaced on Sunday, when an X user posted screenshots of group chat conversations between the 16 students filled with vulgar remarks and objectification of female students and lecturers.

It went viral and triggered other students to step up and hold a student forum on Monday on UI’s Depok campus, on the outskirts of Jakarta, where they expressed their anger toward the 16 alleged perpetrators and demanded that they be expelled.

The university said the suspension came following a recommendation from the task force and was part of efforts to ensure the integrity of its ongoing investigation. The university said it also offers psychological assistance and legal support for the victims and is keeping tabs on the investigation process to prevent any direct or indirect interaction between the alleged perpetrators and victims or witnesses.

“It reflects the university’s commitment to ensuring an objective investigation, protecting all parties involved and maintaining a conducive academic environment,” university spokesperson Erwin Agustian Panigoro said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
