oton, a local fashion brand founded by Toton Januar and Haryo Balitar, was named the Asia-Pacific’s representative in the global final of the International Woolmark Prize 2016/2017 in Paris, France, on January 23.

First held in 1953, the award is given to outstanding fashion talents from across the globe who showcase the beauty and versatility of Merino Wool. International designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent have previously participated in the competition.

Toton told The Jakarta Post via instant messaging app that the brand came up with six looks using merino wool. “The concept was developed during the Regional Final Asia stage and we produced the pieces during the final stage,” he explained.

The collection blended a variety of Indonesian cultural and historical infuences, including paintings in Leang Leang Historical Park in South Sulawesi, the attire of Javanese and Balinese royalty and a traditional weaving technique of craftsmen in Garut, West Java.

Although the brand did not come up as the winner, Toton said that he had learned a lot from the competition, specifically in terms of combining merino wool and traditional craftsmanship.

Following his participation in the International Woolmark Prize 2016/2017, Toton is set to return to Paris at the end of February to join the Paris Women's Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2017-18. (asw)
