A

film by Indonesian director Mouly Surya has been selected to be featured in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Marlina Si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak (Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts) is scheduled to be screened alongside other selected films in Cannes from May 18-28, as well as in other European cities, such as Marseille, France, Geneva, Rome, Milan, Florence and Brussels.

Mouly said it was an honor for his work to be selected for the event. “I hope it can give Marlina the opportunity to achieve wider distribution than my previous films."

Marlina, which tells the story of a widow looking for justice after her house was raided by a gang of robbers, is co-produced by Indonesia's Cinesurya Pictures and Kaninga Pictures, France’s Sasha & Co Production, Malaysia’s Astro Shaw, Singapore’s HOOQ Originals and Thailand’s Purin Pictures. The film’s script was written by Mouly and Rama Adi based on a story by Garin Nugroho.

As previously reported, Marlina was among five films that received funding from France’s ministries of culture and foreign affairs. It is currently in the post-production phase in Paris.

Directors’ Fortnight is a Cannes section held by the French Directors’ Guild since 1969 to support and introduce film talents to the public and critics. Many renowned directors, such as Werner Herzog (Into the Inferno), Jim Jarmusch (Gimme Danger) and Sofia Coppola (Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis), have had their works featured at the event.
