ollowing changes in nutritional intake, changes in skin condition are inevitable during Ramadhan. Pandu Pradana, skin specialist from Bamed Skin Care mentions that there are even chances for the skin to become dehydrated.

Such a condition must not be ignored as the skin plays an important role in one’s health, with the example of secretion, immunologic protection, as well as temperature control, he said.

“It also holds a cosmetic function. If there’s a problem with the skin, it could induce discomfort or even a diminution in confidence,” Pandu added, as quoted by tempo.co

Normal skin will have a fresh glow, feel elastic and have a smooth, moist texture. Pandu remarked that the skin’s moisture mirrored its function as body protector. He also said that moisture also helped with skin regeneration.

In contrast to properly hydrated skin, dry skin will bring health problems. It can also increase the chance for bacteria or other irritants to invade the body.

Pandu suggested consuming enough water during Ramadhan by taking about 2 liters of water or eight glasses of water from iftar (breaking the fast) to suhoor (pre-dawn meals) to maintain skin moisture. He also said to avoid caffeine by refraining from consuming coffee, carbonated drinks and tea. Other suggested foods to take during Ramadhan are meat, fish, vegetables and fruit.

He also emphasize the importance of twice-a-day proper baths with room-temperature or lukewarm water.

“Try to bathe under five minutes and do not use hot water. It can dissolve fat in the skin and causes [the skin to] dry,” said Pandu. He also advised using moisturizing soap, as well as to use a moisturizer as soon as one finished taking baths for optimum results. (mas/asw)
