“As the biggest national art fair in Indonesia, with strong international participation and content, Art Jakarta plays an important role to promote Indonesian arts to local and international collectors, as well as increase Indonesia’s visibility in the regional [art scene] and to bring Indonesia closer to neighboring countries,” said Gil Schneider, Art Jakarta 2017 fair consultant.

Schneider called Indonesia’s national art market “a little bit disintegrated from each other, unlike the connected art market in Europe or North America.”

“There is still a lot to do in order to create a better connection in the individual art market in Southeast Asia. There has to be a change of mindset: the readiness to appreciate and collect artwork from outside of the country’s comfort zone.”

Aside from that, Art Jakarta will also hold a video art competition for the first time. “This competition is held to reinvigorate the public’s interest in video arts,” organizer Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia explained in an official statement.

The competition will use the unity in diversity theme, which is also the main theme of Art Jakarta. “The message is that art is unifying, including in Indonesia.”

Aside from visiting the art fair, visitors can also marvel at Art Jakarta’s MALLart large-scale installation by Indieguriella, attend a creative art class, art-related talk shows, watch the Wayang Potehi performance by University of Indonesia’s Rumah Cinta Wayang, participate in an auction to support the Jakarta Ceramic Biennale, as well as enjoy collaborative installations by fashion and beauty brands.

“Art Jakarta is targeted not only as a platform for serious artwork collectors, but also for the beginners by giving a wider medium and by embracing fashion, lifestyle elements. This is hoped to be able to give birth and to develop new serious collectors,” said Ria Lirungan, editor-in-chief at Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia.

Last year, the art fair featured 630 local and foreign artists, as well as a total of 2,000 pieces of artwork. It also reportedly recorded Rp 104 billion (US$7.816 million) in transactions. (kes)
