he community-based Ubud Village Jazz Festival is set to return on Aug. 11-12 at the Agung Rai Art Museum (ARMA) garden in Ubud, Bali.

The highlight of this year's festival is a performance by the Gerald Clayton Trio with Joe Sanders (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums). Clayton has been nominated four times at the Grammy Awards and won second place at the 2006 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Piano Competition.

Internationally acclaimed guitarist from Bali, Balawan, will also perform with his mixed musical concept featuring Balinese gamelan.

"Our festival not only presents great musicians and groups, both international and national, over two days, but also gives our audiences a memorable experience by providing added value, such as a sophisticated layout design by our architecture team to ensure our audience can feel the local wisdom," Yuri Mahatma, the festival co-founder, told a press conference in Denpasar on Thursday.

As a form of cultural support, the Australian Embassy has endorsed Sydney-based pianist and composer Steve Barry to perform in Bali. Barry was the winner of the 2013 Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year and runner up at the 2013 National Jazz Awards. Cultural center Institut Français Indonesia (IFI), the Austrian Embassy and the Netherlands Embassy also endorsed Samy Thiebault Trio, the Vogel duo and Maaike Dunnen, respectively, to perform at the event.

Another interesting act set to perform at the festival is legendary Indonesian trombone player Benny Likumahua, who will share the stage with his son who is also one of the country's leading young bassists, Barry Likumahua. (kes)
