Below are among highlights of the upcoming festival:

Kartini vs. Pengabdi Setan

Hanung Bramantyo's Kartini and Pengabdi Setan (Satan’s Slaves) helmed by Joko Anwar are the most nominated films at the awards, with both being recognized in 13 out of a total of 22 categories. Among the categories they will compete in are Best Film and Best Director. The full nomination list can be viewed on the festival’s website.

New judging system

Unlike its previous edition, this year's judging process involves local film associations and communities, which will be given the opportunity to endorse line-up nominees. Additionally, a panel of judges was picked based on recommendations from the associations and communities.

Public screening

The festival applies a new rule for films that want to participate in the festival.

“Films released between Oct. 1, 2016 and Sept. 30 that have been screened in a public room can [enter the festival]," said film director and the head of the judging panel, Riri Riza.

New category

After previously including Best Costume as one of its categories in 2015, this year’s festival has added a Best Makeup category.

Budget for Manado

As this is the first time for Manado to host the festival, the provincial administration of North Sulawesi reportedly increased the budget for the event by almost five times or around Rp 10.6 billion (US$780,000) as many renowned celebrities and President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo will reportedly attend the event.
