Indonesian film 'Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts' screens in US

Indonesian film "Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts" began screening in theaters across the United States on Friday, with Canada slated to follow on June 29.

ollowing screenings around the world since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last year, Indonesian film Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts premiered in the Unites States on Friday.

According to a statement, the distribution was overseen through a cooperation between art-house specialists Icarus and Kimstim.

The film, locally called Marlina si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak, is also set to screen in neighboring Canada beginning June 29. 

Since its premiere at the French film festival in May last year, the Mouly Surya-directed film has been distributed across 40 different countries and selected at numerous international film festivals. 

"We strategically targeted international film festivals such as Cannes from the beginning [...] to expand the film distribution channels. The theatrical release in the US is important to introduce Mouly Surya and Indonesian films to the American audience in general," the film's producer, Rama Adi, said in a statement.

Only a few Indonesian films have made it to the silver screen in the US, including martial arts thriller The Raid and its sequel and documentary The Act of Killing, which explores the 1965 communist purge.

The critically successful Marlina has received accolades worldwide and, with rave reviews, holds an aggregated critic's score of 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Leading lady Marsha Timothy won Best Actress at the 2017 Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain for her role. 

The film tells the story of Marlina, a grieving widow living a quiet life in Sumba. Her life is interrupted when a man named Markus, who along with his gang, attempts to rob her house. She later kills him, marking the beginning of an uneasy journey. (liz/wng)
