On Google Doodle’s page, the search engine explained, as quoted by kompas.com, that in 1991 the government set aside five islands and surrounding waters, providing protection to the 58 different types of coral and over 90 species located in the 280-square-mile marine park.
In addition to the sea creatures, Google also mentioned that up to 20,000 people in the area rely on fishing for at least part of their daily nutrition.
Google added that illegal fishing is still happening and the park's corals are vulnerable to climate change. However, it did not stop the government from proposing the park to be on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites, providing additional protections to it. (jes/kes)
